Create a Work-to-Home Doorway
You leave the workplace at the end of the day, but sometimes the workplace doesn't leave you.
Why It Matters:
We can carry meetings, unfinished tasks, difficult conversations, other people's moods, and tomorrow's worries straight through our front door.
Then work gets more than our working hours.
It gets dinner.
It gets our conversations.
It gets our patience.
It gets our evening.
Sometimes, it even gets our sleep.
A work-to-home doorway is a small ritual that helps you intentionally transition from who you need to be at work to who you want to be when you get home.
Try This:
Choose Your Doorway – It might be your car before you drive home, the moment you park, your front porch, or even changing out of your work clothes. Choose one consistent place or action that represents work ends here.
Name What Stays Behind – Before moving into your evening, identify what you're carrying: That meeting stays at work. That person's mood isn't mine. That unfinished task can wait until tomorrow.
Choose What Comes Through the Door – Instead of focusing only on what you're leaving behind, decide what you're taking home: my peace, my humor, my family time, my creativity, myself.
Quick Tip:
Before entering your home, ask yourself:
“What am I carrying through this door that doesn't belong on the other side?”
Then intentionally put one thing down.
Not everything.
Just one thing.
Reflect:
If your front door could refuse entry to one thing from your workday tonight, what would you ask it to keep outside?
